AUBURN, Ala. - Whitney Jacob went for a team-best 11 kills but it was not enough as the Auburn volleyball team fell to Alabama, 3-0, on Wednesday night at the Student Activities Center for 'Pack the Act XI.' Game scores were 30-26, 30-17, 30-28.
Jacob finished with 11 kills on 20 attempts with just three errors for a .400 hitting percentage. Joining her in double-digit kills was Ashlee Johns, who finished with 10. Jelena Sekulic dug a team-best 12 Alabama attacks while Maira Mogollon had 10 digs and 34 assists. Julie Bosler led all players with five blocks.
"We were trying find a rhythm out there and we just couldn't find it," AU Coach Laura Farina said. "I think Alabama is a good volleyball team but I also think we didn't put enough pressure on them. I think defensively we couldn't get anything going."
Auburn was limited to a .180 attack percentage for the match while Alabama knocked balls down at a .331 clip.
Auburn's record is now 10-13, 5-10 in the SEC and the Tigers sit in a tie for eighth in the conference with Mississippi State, who was a 3-2 winner over Ole Miss on Wednesday night in Oxford, Miss. The Tigers do hold the tiebreaker over the Lady Bulldogs by virtue of two wins over MSU earlier in the year.
The Tigers will try and sew up their first SEC Tournament berth on Friday night, Nov. 12, when AU plays host to Kentucky at 7 p.m. in the Student Act. Admission is free.
