Starkville, Miss --The Auburn volleyball team completed its first sweep of the Mississippi schools since 1998 on Sunday as the Tigers knocked off Mississippi State, 3-0, at the Newell-Grissom Building. Jennifer Amobi pounded out 14 kills and served up three aces to lead the Tigers.
“I talked with the seniors and told them that they controlled their own destiny and this is their team,” AU Coach Laura Farina said. “Since then they have responded and it was great to come away with a victory today.”
Though Amobi was the only player to hit double-digit kills, senior Ashlee Johns added nine while freshman Whitney Jacob put down eight with one just error as the Tigers hit .323 as a team, their second-highest percentage of the season. Junior captain Bailey Veit had a team-high 11 digs while freshman Jelena Sekulic (9) and senior Jennifer Buckert (80) combined for 17 more.
Serving played a big role in the match on Sunday as the Tigers amassed a season-high-tying 11 aces while MSU committed 11 serving errors, a 22-point swing.
Auburn moves to 8-10 overall and 3-7 in the SEC, the most wins AU has had in the conference since 2000. Mississippi State fell to 12-12, 3-7 SEC.
“They are a good team and we know they are a good team and we didn’t expect anything less than their best,” Johns said. “We just have to come out every game now and play our best because we are a good team and we deserve these wins.”
Auburn will play the second-half of its four-match road trip next weekend, facing LSU on Friday night in Baton Rouge and Arkansas on Sunday afternoon in Fayetteville.
