AUBURN, Ala. -- Whitney Jacob and Ashlee Johns put down 10 kills apiece but it was not enough to lead the Tigers past South Carolina as the Gamecocks downed Auburn, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon. Game scores were 30-18, 30-20, 30-23.
Jacob had a very efficient afternoon for the Tigers, hitting .500 (10 kills, 2 errors, 16 attempts) while Jennifer Amobi, who returned to the floor after missing the previous three games of the home stand with an injury to her lower leg, put down five kills in her SEC home debut. Johns added a team-best eight digs and three blocks (2 solo) to go along with her 10 kills.
"It is nice to get Jennifer (Amobi) healthy sooner rather than later," AU Coach Laura Farina said. "I think she was a little rusty in some of the rotations, but we had a different lineup than from before she was injured so there was a lot of adapting to do."
"We just didn't have any solutions tonight," Farina said. "We rely so much on Ashlee (Johns) right now and we need other people to step up and take some of the pressure off of her."
Johns has now had double-digits kills in 13 matches this season, including the last 10 in a row.
The Tigers dropped to 6-10, 1-7 SEC while USC moved to 11-6, 4-4 SEC.
Auburn will hit the road for a four-match road trip. The first half of the swing will take the Tigers through the Magnolia State, where they will face Ole Miss on Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. CT, and Mississippi State on Sunday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m.
