AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn volleyball team snapped Tennessee's 25-game Southeastern Conference winning streak but could do little else as the Tigers fell to the 17th-ranked Lady Vols, 3-1, on Friday night at the Student Act. Game scores were 27-30, 30-19, 30-21, 30-16 in favor of UT.
Ashlee Johns led the Tigers for the eighth time this season, connecting on 14 attempts to lead a trio of Tigers in double figures. Jelena Sekulic put down 13 kills to go along with 10 digs while Whitney Jacob added 10 kills. Jennifer Buckert had a team-best 16 digs while Bailey Veit had nine digs and seven blocks.
The Tigers came out firing in the first game, thanks in no small part to the serving of Sekulic, who laid down two aces to get the crowd of 418 riled up into a frenzy. The emotion carried on throughout the course of the first game as the Tigers built a three point lead at 7-4 and then rallied from as many as two down as the teams traded the lead six times and worked through 11 ties. The Tigers closed the door on the first game, and Tennessee's winning streak that dated to last season, when Veit hammered home a kill following an AU timeout.
Tennessee responded to the snapping of their streak with some great volleyball, hitting just 12 errors of the course of the final three games.
The Tigers, now 6-9, 1-6 SEC, will face South Carolina, who fell to Alabama, 3-0, on Friday night in a Sunday afternoon match. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. CT and can be heard in the Auburn-Opelika area on 1400 WANI.
Tennessee moved to 17-1, 7-0 SEC.
