Auburn Volleyball Falls To Arkansas 3-0
Oct. 11, 2002
AUBURN, Ala – Freshman Bailey Veit finished with a career-high 11 kills and was one of three Tigers to record double-digit kills but Auburn could not find a way to get past Arkansas, losing to the LadyBacks, 3-0, on Friday, Oct. 11, at the Student Activities Center. The loss drops AU to 1-16, 0-5 Southeastern Conference, while Arkansas is now 13-4, 4-1 SEC.
“Arkansas is a very balanced team and the kind of team that shows what the level of play is in the SEC, which is where we are going,” AU Coach Laura Farina said. “Bailey had a very nice match for us. So did Grace Boyd. Overall we are getting healthier and that is allowing us to have more role players to give everyone a breather. That is certainly going to help us.”
Veit (11 digs) and senior Kathia McKenzie (10 kills, 10 digs) both finished with double-doubles while Brittney Diaz was the third Tiger with double figures in kills, putting down 10. Boyd finished with 13 digs.
Game one was a very competitive game as the Tigers kept it close throughout before falling, 30-25. Veit hammered home seven of her kills on 10 attempts (.600) in the first game as AU hit .209 compared to Arkansas’ .250.
The second game got away from the Tigers quickly as Arkansas jumped out to a 13-3 lead before cruising to the 30-15 victory. Poor hitting by AU (-.029) and stellar hitting by Arkansas (.382) was the difference in the game as UA took the two game lead into the intermission.
The third game was one of the best games Auburn has played all season. After allowing Arkansas to jump out to a 21-13 lead, the Tigers roared back after a timeout to close within four, 25-21. AU kept the pressure on, closing to within two, 29-27, but could not pull even, falling 30-27 in the final game.
Auburn will return to the Student Activities Center on Sunday, Oct. 13, for Boys and Girls Scout Day. The game time with the Tigers of LSU is set for 2 p.m.
