Auburn Drops Match to #5 Florida, 3-0
October 1, 2004
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Auburn volleyball team played well but was still not able to get past Florida on Friday night, falling to the No. 5-ranked Gators by a final count of 3-0 at the O’Connell Center. Game scores were 30-23, 30-16, 30-26.
“The team followed the game plan that we laid out for them. We needed to pass well to succeed and we did that in games one and three,” AU Coach Laura Farina said. “I thought we competed well. We competed for an entire match instead of just parts of a match.”
Auburn’s Ashlee Johns and Jennifer Amobi each posted 10 kills on the night to lead the Tigers while Jennifer Buckert and Bailey Veit each had six digs for AU.
The Tigers hung with the Gators throughout games one and three. In both games, the Tigers found the deficit to be as little as two points near the end of the game, trailing 28-26 in game three. Game three actually saw the Tigers holding the lead at 17-16 before UF reclaimed the lead. There was a total of 12 ties and seven lead changes throughout the match.
The Tigers’ attack percentage of .181 for the match (37-18-105) was the highest for AU against the Gators under Farina’s guidance while the .303 hitting in game one (14-4-33) was also the highest for a single game.
Florida had three players with double-digit kills as the Gators hit a collective .420 (52-10-100) for the match.
The Tigers’ 26 points in the third game was the most points AU has scored on the Gators in a single game since rally scoring came into effect prior to the 2001 season. The previous high was 21 during last season’s match at Auburn.
The loss dropped Auburn’s record to 6-5, 1-2 SEC while the Gators moved to 11-2, 3-0 SEC.
The Tigers close out their four-match SEC road swing on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. ET match at Georgia.
