at Comcast Lobo Invitational
September 20, 2002
- The Auburn volleyball team could not overcome some accurate hitting by Temple as the Tigers fell, 3-0, to the Owls at the Comcast Lobo Invitational on Friday night on the campus of New Mexico University. Auburn was outhit for the match, .298 to .069. Freshman Bailey Veit finished with a team-high 11 digs for the Tigers. The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-9 on the season while the Owls are now 7-4.
Temple jumped out quickly during game one, taking a 10-3 lead early on. The Tigers refused to go down without a fight, however, narrowing their defecit to a point at 13-12. Unfortunately for AU, the Owls caught fire at that point, going on a 17-4 run to close out the match, 30-16. The Owls outhit the Tigers .364 to .031 for the game.
Game two showed more of the same in the early going for both squads as the Owls again jumped out to a 10-3 lead. TU kept the heat on, extending the lead to 23-11, forcing the Tigers into a timeout. A few furious rallies ensued, but the Tigers continued to come out on the short end, falling 30-16. The Tigers were again outhit in the game, this time .292 to .077.
The Tigers came out with a renewed enthusiasm in the third game, playing a back-and-forth game in the early going. After allowing Temple to get out to a five point lead at 13-8, the Tigers found a spark behind senior Grace Boyd and freshman Allex Doherty. Boyd, who finished the match with six kills, hammered down two while the serving of Doherty allowed AU to narrow the gap to one, 13-12. Unfortunately for the Tigers they could not sustain the momentum, finally falling to the Owls, 30-20.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, September 21, with two matches. AU will take on SMU at 10 a.m. MT before closing out the tournament with host New Mexico at 7 p.m. MT.
