Tigers Need Five Games to Down UAB

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Auburn volleyball team needed to rally in the fifth game to defeat in-state rival UAB, 3-2, on Saturday night at the Student Act. The Tigers and Blazers traded game wins with the Tigers pulling it together for a 30-20, 23-30, 30-16, 17-30, 15-13 victory.
Ashlee Johns led the Tigers offensively with 20 kills while Jelena Sekulic (12) Whitney Jacob (11) and Bailey Veit (10) combined for 33 kills among them. Veit's 13 digs leg the team, just ahead of libero Jennifer Buckert's 12. Jacob led all players with six blocks, including two critical blocks down the stretch of game five.
"I am glad we had the opportunity to play and we were fortunate to get a win tonight," AU Coach Laura Farina said.
The Tigers hit a collect .215 for the match. In the three games AU won, they went for went for 39 kills against just 13 errors on 81 attempts for a .321 hitting percentage. However, in the two games they dropped, AU hit just .088 (23-17-88).
The same was true for the Blazers. In games two and four, UAB knocked balls down at a .297 clip (29-10-64) while hitting just .023 (23-21-87) in games one, three and five for a combined .146 attack percentage.
The match was the final non-conference match for AU. The Tigers head into conference action with a 5-3 record and will face archrival Alabama on Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Tuscaloosa.
The five-game match was the third of the season for the Tigers, who are 2-1 in matches that go the maximum five games.
UAB's record dropped to 0-8 on the year.
