Auburn Opens SEC Action At Mississippi State and Alabama

AUBURN, Ala. - The SEC West-leading Auburn volleyball team begins Southeastern Conference competition, traveling to Mississippi State on Friday and Alabama on Sunday.
The Tigers (8-3) will face off with Mississippi State (4-7) at 7 p.m. in Starkville, Miss., on Friday. Free live video streaming is available at www.MStateAthletics.com. The squad then heads to rival Alabama (2-8) on Sunday, taking on the Crimson Tide at 1:07 p.m. The match will be televised on CSS.
The Tigers competed in their final in-season tournament last weekend in Statesboro, Ga., and came away with three wins and the Bash in the `Boro tournament title. Auburn opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Coastal Carolina on Sept. 11. On day two, the Tigers swept the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest and concluded the match with a 3-2 win over host Georgia Southern.
Under first-year head coach Jenny Hazelwood, the Bulldogs are off to a 4-7 start and are coming off a 2-1 finish at their own Bulldog Invitational. The squad defeated Northwestern State (3-0) and Eastern Michigan (3-2), but fell to Arkansas State (1-3). Junior libero Kayla Woodard leads the conference with 186 total digs and is second with a 4.54 digs per set average. Junior Ashley Newsome leads the team in both kills (135) and blocks (43).
The Crimson Tide (2-8) traveled to the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento, Calif., last weekend and fell to Fresno State (3-2), San Francisco (3-2) and Sacramento State (3-2). Freshman Kelsey Anderson was named to the all-tournament team. Ashley Frazier leads the squad with a 2.58 kills per set average and has a team-best 93 kills on the season. Kayla Schmidt has a team-high 99 digs and averages 2.54 per set.
Sunday afternoon's match-up between the Tigers and the Crimson Tide will be televised live on CSS. Chris Stewart will be providing play-by-play, while Maria Taylor will be the color analyst. This is the first televised game of the season for Auburn. CSS will also broadcast the squads' Nov. 22 match at Ole Miss.
After three weeks on the road, the Tigers return to the Student Activities Center for a 6 p.m. match with LSU on Sept. 25.
