AUBURN, Ala. - Outside hitter Katherine Culwell was named the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Week for her contributions in Auburn's 3-0 start to the 2009 season.
The honor is Auburn's first weekly award since the 2004 season and the first-ever Freshman of the Week honor since the SEC started recognizing it in 2005.
"I'm very proud of Katherine and her efforts from this weekend," Wade Benson, head volleyball coach, said. "This shows we are moving in the right direction as a program and we look to continue to build on what we accomplished this weekend as a team."
Culwell, a Dallas native, was named the War Eagle Invitational Most Valuable Player after leading the Tigers to the team title. She averaged 2.78 kills per set and finished the weekend hitting .300, including a .533 hitting performance against Alabama A&M on Friday. Culwell also averaged 2.89 digs per set with 26 on the weekend, including a match-best 14 against UAB Saturday morning.
"The weekend went really well and the fact that I got to start was exciting enough," Culwell said. "I wanted to go out, do my job and help the team come away from the weekend with three wins. "
Auburn (3-0) returns to the court Wednesday, Sept. 2., when it hosts Troy. The match is set for 7 p.m. at the Student Activities Center.
