Winston-Salem, N.C.—The Auburn volleyball team fell in its season opener to Wake Forest at the Deacon Invitational, 30-13, 30-20, 30-7, in Laura Farina’s first game as Auburn head coach.

In game one, the Tigers dug themselves an early hole and could never fully recover.  The Tigers battled back to make it 20-11, but the Demon Deacons reeled off eight straight points to put it away 30-13.  Ashley Fisher of Wake Forest led the attack with five kills.

The Tigers bounced back in game two by tying the game at 11-11.  Wake Forest then took control of the game by scoring the next point and edging the Tigers 30-20.  The Demon Deacons were led by Fisher’s six kills in the second game.

Wake Forest showed its experience in the third game by jumping out to a 12-1 lead and defeating the Tigers 30-7.  Fisher finished the match with 13 kills.

“Without a full lineup, we are making things happen,” said Auburn head coach Laura Farina.  “I’m proud of the way our girls kept in the game.”

Auburn returns to action in the Deacon Invitational when they take on Virginia Tech on Saturday, August 31 at 11 a.m. (EST).
