Auburn volleyball begins 2014 season in Washington, D.C.

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn volleyball opens the 2014 season on the road in the nation's capital as the Tigers begin the year at the George Washington Invitational in Washington, D.C.
 
The Tigers will play two matches on Friday, beginning the regular season with North Dakota at 11 a.m. CT and taking on the host, George Washington, at 6 p.m. CT to close out the day. On Saturday, Auburn will conclude the opening weekend of action versus Arkansas State at noon.
 
Auburn finished with a 19-11 overall record last season and returns a pair of starters along with five letter-winners from the 2013 squad. The Tigers welcome in six newcomers to the 2014 roster.
 
Head coach Rick Nold is entering his fourth season at the helm of the Tigers' program, after leading Auburn to its most wins since the 2010 season a year ago. Nold can also earn his 50th win as Auburn's head coach if the Tigers can pick up a weekend sweep.
 
• Auburn begins its 43rd season of volleyball when the Tigers open the 2014 season versus North Dakota in the first match of the George Washington Invitational. The Tigers will also face George Washington on Friday before concluding the two-day tourney against Arkansas State Saturday.
• Auburn holds an all-time record of 575-571-4 (.502) through 42 full seasons of volleyball. The Tigers' hold a 145-270 (.350) record in SEC play.
• The Tigers finished 19-11 overall in 2013, 10-8 in SEC play, finishing tied for sixth in the SEC.
• Head coach Rick Nold is 47-43 entering his fourth season on the Plains; he is just the second coach in Auburn history to have a winning record after three seasons.
• Last season Auburn earned 10 SEC wins for the seventh time in school history and just the second time in the last 15 seasons.
• Auburn returns two starters and five letter-winners from the 2013 team.
• The Tigers compiled a 5-5 record against teams that earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
• Auburn was 17-5 when hitting .200 or better as a team during the 2013 season.
• Sophomore Stephanie Campbell started every match and played every set during the 2013 season, making her the first freshman to accomplish that feat since Sarah Bullock in 2009.
• Auburn added the 14th-best recruiting class according to PrepVolleyball.com during the offseason, including the Gatorade National Player of the Year, Alexa Filley.
 
Auburn has won eight out of its last 10 season-opening matches, dating back to the 2004 season. The Tigers swept Saint Louis in the 2013 season opener.

• Under fourth-year head coach Rick Nold, Auburn is 24-8 against non-conference foes.
• The Tigers have also posted an impressive record in tournament play since Nold took charge in 2011. Auburn is 21-7 (.750) in nine tournament appearances.

•The Tigers are playing their first match in Washington, D.C. since 1997. Auburn is 5-2 all time when playing in the nation's capital.
• Auburn's last match in Washington, D.C. was a 3-0 win over Maryland-Baltimore County at the Patriot Invitational in 1997.
• This weekend's slate of matches will be the first-ever appearance for the Tigers at George Washington's Charles E. Smith Center.
