AUBURN - The Auburn volleyball team is set to kick off its 2007 season this weekend with the War Eagle Invitational in the Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers kick off the tournament with Troy on Friday at 7 p.m.
Action for Auburn continues on Saturday with Nicholls State at 12 p.m., followed by Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
For the Tigers, this marks the 12 th time in the team's 22-year history that it has hosted the War Eagle Invitational. Auburn holds a 22-10 all-time record in its own tournament.
"I'm glad that we are opening at home," said sixth-year head coach Laura Farina. "After this weekend we are going to be on the road for the next three weekends, so playing in the Coliseum, in front of our own fans is great."
Auburn is 10-11 all-time in season-opening matches and 3-2 under Farina. The Tigers hold a 4-1 advantage when they open up the season at home.
The team has been practicing for more than two weeks in preparation for the 2007 season. Auburn is coming off of a 13-18 campaign in 2006, going 5-15 in SEC play.
"We've put more challenges on this team in practice than we ever had. The fundamental skills are solid and this is the most athletic team that we've had here at Auburn," said Farina. "We have a core leadership of upperclassmen that are driving the team to excel."
The Tigers return six letterwinners and four starters from 2006, including seniors Whitney Jacob, Jelena Sekulic and Rachel Shanks. Nine newcomers, two transfers and seven freshmen, join the team for the upcoming season.
"Just like the team, the coaching staff is ready to see us compete. We've had a solid preseason, everyone is healthy, everyone is improving and its time," said Farina.
Admission is free for the War Eagle Invitational. All matches will take place at Auburn's Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
