May 10, 2003
AUBURN - Auburn volleyball player Ashley Johns and assistant coach Matt Darling have been selected to the USA Select Team to participate in the European Spring Cup by the United States Association of Volleyball.
Sanctioned by the USAV and organized by Bring It Promotions, the USA Select Team is participating from May 8 to 18 in the European Spring Cup for the 3rd consecutive year.
This year's competition is in Brno, Czech Republic and has a field of nine other European National Teams including: Czech Republic (A and B Teams), Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, Estonia, Turkey, Denmark, and Sweden.
The USA Select Team comprises top collegiate players, including many women that are considered part of the USAV "pipeline" of potential National Team athletes.
Coaching the team are Reed Sunahara (University of Cincinnati), Beth Launiere (University of Utah) and Darling.
"This is a much needed experience for these collegiate women athletes to play at the international level," says Sunahara.
Johns came to Auburn last year after two seasons at Missouri. This past year she was forced to sit out as a transfer, but will be looked to for leadership this upcoming season.
"This is a great experience for Ashley and Matt," AU Coach Laura Farina said. "Both Ashley and Matt will represent Auburn well and this shows how much their talent has been recognized."
