AUBURN - Despite winning the first game 31-29, the Auburn volleyball team (11-18, 3-15 SEC) could not keep the momentum as Arkansas (11-16, 5-12 SEC) won the next three to take the 3-1 win Friday night in the Student Activity Center.
Led by four player hitting in double figures, the Lady Razorbacks won the final three games of the match, 30-23, 30-22, 30-23 to take the win and avenge a loss to Auburn earlier this season in Fayetteville, Ark.
The match was the home finale for the Tigers and Auburn seniors Whitney Jacob, Jelena Sekulic and Rachel Shanks were honored as part of Senior Night ceremonies. Playing in their final home match, the trio came together to lead the Tigers one more time, led by Jacob with 14 kills. Sekulic and Shanks chipped in 12 each.
After going down early, Auburn was able to put together a late rally in the first game for the 31-29 win. The momentum carried over to the second game as the Tigers were able to jump out to a quick 4-1 lead, but Arkansas bounced back and AU was not able to find that chemistry again.
"It wasn't a very good ballgame on either side of the net," said head coach Laura Farina. We just tried to find ways to find chemistry out there and create some execution and none of our efforts worked, the better team won tonight."
Auburn wraps up the 2007 season next weekend with road matches at Ole Miss and LSU. The Tigers are set for a 7 p.m., Nov. 16 matchup against the Lady Rebels and a 1:30 p.m., Nov. 18 meeting at LSU.
Sekulic posted Auburn's only double-double in the match, finishing with 12 kills and 15 digs. Also stepping up on defense was freshman libero Liz Crouch with 22 digs for her sixth 20-dig match of the season.
Junior outside hitter Jessica Glover finished fourth on the team with nine kills while stepping up at the net for four blocks.
