STATESBORO, Ga. - Behind freshman Sarah Bullock's season-high 12 kills, the Auburn volleyball team defeated Wake Forest, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-15), in the first game of day two at the Bash in the `Boro on the campus of Georgia Southern University. Auburn improves to 7-3 on the year.
Bullock finished the match with a .545 attack percentage with 12 kills on 22 attacks and no errors. The Allen, Texas, native also finished with six digs, two blocks and a service ace. Junior setter Sara Shanks led the team with seven digs and two aces, while junior Liz Crouch had six digs.
The Demon Deacons (0-8) were led by Kadija Fornah with nine kills, while setter Megan Carnell finished with 18 assists.
The Tigers came out with a 4-1 run in set one and continued to push, going up by four at the 8-4 mark with the help of a kill from Bullock. Wake Forest put together a 7-3 run, however to tie the set at 12 apiece. Two-straight Demon Deacon service errors gave Auburn the 14-13 advantage and was followed by four-consecutive Tiger points to make 18-14. Another Auburn run, highlighted by a trio of kills from Culwell, solidified the 25-18 win.
The two squads battled in the second set, seeing eight ties and four lead changes. At 10-10, two kills from Bullock led to a 5-2 Auburn run, giving the Tigers the 15-12 advantage. The score remained close until a kill from junior Jonelle Wallace gave Auburn the 21-17 lead. The Tigers went on and took set two 25-19.
Auburn opened the third set with a 4-0 run, but Wake Forest came right back and tied the set at five a piece. The Tigers, however, rallied with the help of three kills from junior Kelly Fidero and went up 13-9. Auburn continued to push and closed out the match with a 6-0 run, highlighted by three kills from Bullock, to win 25-15.
Auburn concludes the Bash in the `Boro tournament with a match against host Georgia Southern at 6 p.m.
