Tempe, Ariz. -- The Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season on Friday morning in Tempe, Ariz., at the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic, defeating Texas State in five games. Auburn captured games one, three and five as they handed the Bobcats its fourth loss of the season, 34-32, 23-30, 30-19, 26-30, 15-7.

"We had a lot of ups and downs this morning," head AU coach Laura Farina said. "The games we lost were created by errors in every facet of the game. We would have a great passing game and then struggle with serving. The little things we had problems with had a cumulative effect and the result was the two lost games."

Newcomer Dalia Naidzinaviciute racked up 17 kills on 36 attempts, both career highs, to lead the Auburn attack. Bailey Veit contributed 24 digs and Joanna Pappas, in her first collegiate start, had 49 assists as the setter. Julie Bosler led the group with nine blocks, seven assisted.

"Joanna Pappas had her first collegiate start as a setter," Farina commented. "I think she got a good taste of what collegiate volleyball is all about. Texas State had a good game plan. They forced us to play in an uncomfortable offense in order to succeed."

Jelena Sekulic ended the 34-point game one with a service ace. Naidzinaviciute contributed five kills on 10 attempts and Bailey Veit had 10 digs as AU took game one, 34-32. The Tigers scored four consecutive points after being down 12-17, in game two, to come to within one. The Bobcats make a strong surge after the Tigers got within one and captured game two, 23-30.

After the short break, Auburn took control of game three from the beginning and never trailed, winning, 30-19. In game four, the Tigers struggled, hitting only 16 percent and committing seven errors. Auburn regained composure in the fifth game and easily won the match, 15-7.

"Arizona State will bring in a very athletic team," Farina said. "There will be a lot of energy in the arena tonight for our game and that will be an exciting atmosphere to play in."
