MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Auburn volleyball team opened Saturday's competition of the Blue Raider Bash with a 3-0 (22-25, 17-25, 23-25) loss to Duke on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
Senior Alyssa Davis led the Tigers (4-2) with a season-best nine kills and finished with five blocks (two solo, three assist blocks). Sophomore Sarah Bullock had eight kills and 11 digs, while senior libero Liz Crouch had 10 digs on the day.
Sofia Dunworth led Duke (5-1) with 11 kills, while setter Kellie Catanach finished with 36 assists and 10 digs. Libero Ali McCurdy had a match-high 20 digs for the Blue Devils.
The Tigers opened the first set on a 6-2 run highlighted by a pair of kills from Lauren Mellor. Another Auburn run pushed the Tigers up 12-5, but the Blue Devils utilized a 7-1 rally to tie the set up at 13 apiece. The two squads battled back and forth until another Duke run gave the Blue Devils the 25-22 set win.
Duke took a quick 7-0 lead to start the second set and pushed ahead to take an eight-point lead at 16-8. A kill from Mellor and a service ace by Chelsea Wintzinger brought Auburn within six at 16-10, but Duke battled on to win the set, 25-17.
Kills by four separate Tigers highlighted a 5-3 lead at the start of the third and final set. The Blue Devils fought back and took a 9-7 advantage on a five-point run. The two teams exchanged points throughout the rest of the set until, tied at 23, Duke rallied ahead to win the match 25-23.
Auburn faces host Middle Tennessee State tonight at 7 p.m. and will conclude the Blue Raider Bash tomorrow with a 1 p.m. match up against Southern Mississippi.
