AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn women's tennis head coach Tim Gray announced the signing of Emily Newton and Jackie Kasler to National Letters of Intent for the 2010-11 season Monday.
Newton will come to The Plains after a standout career at Northview High School in Dothan. She will join the Auburn program with a solid junior tennis resume, as she has won the Southern 18s title, finished third at nationals and won a national doubles title in her career. Last spring, Newton was ranked No. 14 in the South Region among 18-year olds.
Last spring, she won the Alabama Class 6A No.1 singles title at Northview, finishing the 2009 spring season undefeated. She is ranked as a four-star recruit and the No. 1 player in the state of Alabama by TennisRecruiting.net, and No. 73 nationally in the TennisRPI rankings.
Kasler joins the Auburn family from Gulf Breeze High School in Pensacola, Fla. She has earned a trio of Florida State High School Championships in her career, in two doubles titles and an individual title. She is ranked as a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, the No. 8 ranked player in the state of Florida, and No. 26 in the TennisRPI nationally rankings.
"I am thrilled to have Emily and Jackie join the Tigers next year," said head coach Tim Gray of his recruiting class. "Not only are they great players, but they are outstanding people."
According to TennisRecruiting.net, this is the highest-rated recruiting class since 2005, when Gray welcomed two of the top players in program history, Whitney Chappell (five-star) and Alex Haney (four-star) to Auburn, both of whom graduated last season.
"We looked at many other great players, but I think we found the perfect fit with these two," said Gray.
The Tigers will open up the 2010 spring season as the squad hosts Mercer and Kennesaw St. from City of Auburn/Yarborough Tennis Center on Jan. 23.
