AUBURN, Ala. - The fall season for the Auburn women's tennis team concludes this weekend as the nation's sixth-ranked doubles team of Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger will represent the Tigers at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The tournament runs Thursday-Sunday; Auburn's pair is seeded No. 2 in the doubles draw and will have a first-round bye to begin play. Their selection marks the second-straight season that Burgmans/Flickinger has represented the Tigers at the prestigious fall tournament.
"We are looking forward to the National Indoor Championships, it's always really a great experience," head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. "It's awesome that Pleun and Emily's success and hard work this fall on the court has set them up to have this amazing opportunity."
"We know it's going to be a tough tournament, every match is a 50-50 chance and every match you have to bring your very best tennis to the court. I think these two are up for the challenge. It's a great way to end a very solid fall season."
The pair is 8-2 this season in doubles and enters the tournament fresh off winning their second consecutive ITA Southern Regional doubles championship to earn an automatic qualifying bid into the tournament. A year ago, Burgmans/Flickinger advanced to the consolation finals at National Indoors.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships features a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles draw for men and women. Winners of the 12 USTA/ITA Regional tournaments in October gain automatic entry to the national tournament.
