Auburn, Ala. - Auburn's Melissa Koning and Dunja Djranovic advance in singles play at the SEC Coaches Classic held at the City of Auburn/Auburn University Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Sophomore Koning defeated Renee Joseph of Mississippi State 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of flight one singles. Koning will face the number one seed Megan Alexander tomorrow.
Freshman Djranovic defeated Elise Wettermark of Alabama 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of flight four singles. She will face Megan McGavock of South Carolina tomorrow.
Also in singles action, Alex Haney defeated Elna DeVilliers of Mississippi State 7-5, 6-3 in the first round. Haney then fell to Amanda Taylor of Vanderbilt 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Junior Whitney Chappell lost to Christine Johnson of Kentucky 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of singles. Chappell then defeated Yana Kireeva of Ole Miss 6-3, 6-2 in consolation.
Sophomore Jil Hastenrath fell to Jennifer Meredith of Tennessee in the first round of singles. Freshman Mary Claire Slade fell to Adrienne Elsberry of Georgia 7-5, 6-3. Gaby Beelen was defeated by Delia Damaschin of Arkansas 6-3, 6-3 in singles play. Heather Bybee was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Carolina Escamilla of Kentucky.
In doubles consolation action, Haney and Koning defeated Nika Koukharchouka and Preeehti Subramanian of Ole Miss 8-5. Hastenrath and Slade were defeated 8-7 by Merritt Emery and Bianca Svensson of Alabama. Bybee and Djuranovic were defeated 8-1 by Liberty Sveke and Keilly Ulery of Vanderbilt.
Day three of the SEC Coaches Classic will begin at 9 a.m. with doubles followed by main draw singles and consolation singles.
