Oct. 27, 2013

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Auburn's women's tennis team wrapped up its first tournament of the fall on clay at the USTA Clay Courts at Disney this weekend.

Auburn's Ashley Kitchen picked up two wins on the weekend after dropping her first match at the tournament. The sophomore took the opening set but fell in three, losing 6-4, 5-7, 2-6 to Florida's Stefani Stojic Thursday morning. Kitchen advanced in the singles consolation draw, defeating Yelena Nemchen (Tulsa) 6-4 in the first set. Kitchen took the win after Menchen retired heading into the second set.

On Saturday, Kitchen wrapped up the tournament earning a win in a thrilling three-setter. After falling down a set early in the match, Kitchen rallied to knock off New Mexico's Emily Oliver 3-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(8).

After receiving a bye to open the tournament, sophomore Pleun Burgmans cruised into the Round of 16, taking down Erica Oosterhuat, 6-4, 6-3 in her first match on Thursday. Burgmans' seven-match unbeaten streak ended on Friday against Florida's Kourtney Keegan, falling 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2.

Paula de Man finished 0-2 at the tournament, losing a pair of tough three-set matches. The sophomore fell in three sets to Jess Alney, 1-6, 7-6(8) in the Round of 32 to open play. In the singles consolation draw, de Man won the first, but could not hold off Texas Tech's Samantha Czarniak losing 3-6, 7-5, 1-0(8).

Michala Kucharova fell 6-0, 6-4 in her first action on clay this season to Mary Haffey. The sophomore lost her only match in the singles consolation draw to Oklahoma State's Carla Tur Muri, 6-4, 6-2.

The sophomore doubles tandem of Kucharova and Kitchen picked up an 8-4 victory over Oklahoma State's Megan McCray and Carla Alvares in the first round of doubles competition on Thursday afternoon. In Friday's Round of 16, the tandem fell 8-3 to Vanderbilt's Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn.

Auburn's second doubles pair of Burgmans and de Man received a first-round bye, but fell in the Round of 16 to Texas A&M's Ines Desheza and Paula Desheza, 8-7(6).

The Tigers wrap up their fall schedule in Bradenton, Fla., at the Dickie V Classic on Nov. 8-10.
