BIRMINGHAM - When the dust settled from a long day of action on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by Samford University, two members of the Auburn women's tennis team remained and will contend for titles on Sunday.
Auburn opened the day with only Jen Pfeifler alive in the main draw singles bracket and closed the day in identical fashion. The freshman from Gulf Breeze, Fla. earned a three-set victory over LSU's Kaitlin Burns 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals and a matchup with Kristi Boxx from Ole Miss.
She will be joined in Sunday competition by junior Plamena Kurteva, who knocked off Northwestern State's Andrea Nedorostova 7-5, 6-2, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win over Milou Israel from Louisiana-Lafayette to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw consolation bracket against Roseline Dion (Mississippi State).
If either are victorious on Sunday, they will advance to Monday's championship round.
Both Pfeifler and Kurteva also had action in doubles play on Saturday. Pfeifler, in action with partner Jacqueline Kasler, took care of business against LSU's Rebecca Bodine and Ariel Morton with an 8-2 win to earn a semifinal match-up with Mariam Kurdadze and Emma Levy from Tulane.
The Auburn tandem and longtime partners went on to falter in a back-and-forth 8-6 set and narrowly miss a berth in the quarters on Sunday. The loss was the first of the season for Pfeifler/Kasler and drops them to 5-1 this fall.
Kurteva, playing with fellow junior Paulina Schippers, dropped an 8-4 match to Alabama's Courtney McLane and Taylor Lindsey to end the duo's run.
Freshman Lauren Levant took to the courts for the first time this season on Saturday morning. The Birmingham-native knocked off Samford's Kate Stanford 6-4, 6-1, but was up-ended by Isabelle Rocher (ULM) 7-5, 6-3 in the quarters of the B Draw bracket.
Taylor Cohen was defeated in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 by Madlie Janse Van Rensburg of the home team Samford Bulldogs in the sophomore's lone singles match on Saturday.
After being knocked out of the main doubles bracket on Friday, the team of freshman Emily Flickinger and Cohen rallied to defeat Louisiana-Lafayette's Milou Israel and Erin Wilbert 8-5. The duo then fell to LSU's Kaitlin Burns and Yvette Vlaar, 8-5.
Action in the 2011 USTA-ITA Southern Regional Championships will continue Sunday at 10 a.m. (CDT) and will last throughout the day at the Samford Tennis Complex.
