BIRMINGHAM - Auburn women's tennis aims to build on its strong opening weekend as it begins play on Friday in the 2011 USTA/ITA Regional championship hosted by Samford University.
The Tigers picked up a doubles title win by freshman Jen Pfeifler and sophomore Jacqueline Kasler, along with an undefeated singles bracket win by sophomore Taylor Cohen in the team's first action of the season last week at the Roberta Allison Classic hosted by Alabama.
Overall, Auburn picked up 15 wins in 19 matches in Tuscaloosa.
Six Auburn players will compete in the singles brackets at Samford, with the six also comprising three doubles tandems - including last week's victorious combo of Pfeifler and Kasler.
Play begins at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) on Friday and Saturday. Sunday's competition will start at 9 a.m., while Monday's championship matches will begin at a time that is yet to be determined. All action will be played on six outdoor courts and three indoor courts at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion on the campus of Samford University.
Players will be competing this weekend for the right to advance to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 3-6 at the USTA-Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Winners from both the main singles and doubles draws will earn a berth.
The field for the 2011 USTA/ITA Southern Regional championship includes the host - Samford, along with players from Alabama, Auburn, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Lafayette, ULM, LSU, Mississippi State, Northwestern State, Ole Miss, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy, Tulane and UAB.
