TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
Auburn women’s tennis picked up nine wins between singles and doubles play during day one at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships being held at the Alabama Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Alabama.
Day one of competition began with doubles play and the Tigers came out strong winning three of the team's four matches. The team was led by the second-seeded duo of Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfeifler. The pair from Gulf Breeze, Fla., downed LSU's Burns/Morton, 8-3.
Singles play was up next and saw Auburn win six of its 10 matches. Both Pfeifler and Kasler were victorious again, as Pfeifler, seeded fourth, took out Alabama's Emily Zabor, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. Kasler meanwhile downed seventh-seeded Emma Lecy of Tulane in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Freshmen Pleun Burgmans and Michala Kucarova both cruised to victories Friday afternoon. Burgmans won by a tally of 6-1, 6-1 over Isabel Fernandez of UAB. Kucharova wasted little time in dispatching Sarai Flores of Mississippi State, 6-0, 6-0.
Auburn's other two wins were claimed by Plamena Kurteva who defeated Andrea Nedorostova of Northwestern State, 6-3, 6-2, and Lauren Levant who easily defeated Rebekah Adewumi of Jackson State 6-1, 6-1.
Saturday's action will continue with first serve at 9 a.m.
