Women's Tennis Shines at ITA Southern Regionals

Oct. 18, 2013

AUBURN, Ala. – After the first day of competition at the Auburn-hosted ITA Southern Regionals, the Auburn women’s tennis team has advanced three individuals in the main singles draw in Pleun Burgmans, Michalla Kucharova and Emily Flickinger, and all three doubles teams picked up tournament opening wins.

Burgmans, Kucharova and Flickinger all picked up two wins in singles to land in the Round of 16, which will be played Saturday afternoon at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Burgmans breezed through a 6-2, 6-2 win over Samford’s Kristin Lewis, and took Mississippi State’s Timea Guibe down in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Flickinger also won each of her matches in two sets defeating LSU’s Skylar Holloway 6-1, 7-5 and South Alabama’s Laure Mastuskova 6-1, 6-1.

Kucharova found a familiar foe in South Alabama’s Michaela Mezarosova, an opponent she has known since she was 9-years-old. With a 6-3, 6-3 win, she took down her hometown friend from Slovakia for the first time. She followed that up with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Marie Aubert of Nicholls State.

The morning started with great success for the Tigers as the trio of doubles teams entered in the main draw all took down their opponents with ease. Burgmans and Flickinger teamed up for a quick 8-2 victory of fellow SEC foe Skylar Holloway and Gabriel Otero of LSU, while longtime doubles teammates Jen Pfiefler and Jackie Kasler picked up an 8-5 win over Alabama’s Carmen Blanco and Emily Zabor. The final pairing of Michalla Kucharova and Reka Muller took down Joanna Nalborska and Alexandra Starkova of Louisiana Tech. With only one round of doubles played on Friday, the round of 16 will begin play at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

“It was a good first day with a lot of quality tennis,” head women’s tennis coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “I was very pleased with the energy, especially in doubles. And when you can start out with that energy, it sets the tone for the rest of the day. We had some really tough matches, but even for the girls that lost their first matches, they rebounded and got good wins later. I think we can continue to play high-level tennis.”

While five of the eight Auburn player in the main draw have dropped to the singles consolation bracket, all five won their follow up matches to stay alive.
