MIAMI, Fla. - The fall season continues this weekend for the Auburn University women's tennis team as it travels to the University of Miami to compete in the Miami Fall Invite Friday through Sunday. Including Auburn, the teams competing will be from Ole Miss, Purdue, Miami and Barry University.
Senior Jackie Kasler, junior Jen Pfeifler, sophomore Michala Kucharova and freshman Reka Muller will make up the Auburn squad this weekend. Muller is coming off a great start to her fall season after winning her singles flight at the Razorback Classic last weekend. The Hungary-native posted three wins in three days including a 7-6 (5), 6-2 defeat of Arkansas' Shannon Hudson for the U.S. Open flight title.
"Reka looked great last week," Auburn head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. "She's playing good tennis right now and I'm anxious to see her carry that confidence over into this weekend's tournament."
Muller will look to make it four singles wins in a row to start her fall season when she faces Miami's Deborah Suarez as the four-seed of the Green singles field on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
Kucharova is also coming off a solid first fall outing two weeks ago after she tallied her first career victory over a ranked opponent in the pre-qualifying singles draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. The sophomore scored a first-round win over 82nd-ranked Kim Stubbe of Arizona, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-2 to advance to the second day, but then fell to eventual qualifier Rachel Pierson of Virginia, 6-3, 6-1.
Looking for her second singles win of the fall, Kucharova will face Caroline Rohde Moe of Ole Miss, who is the top-seed in the tournament and No. 39 in the nation. That match is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. as well.
Muller and Kucharova will team together in doubles for the first time this year when they face Andjela Djokovic and Natalia Davila of Purdue in the first round of the Green doubles field starting at 8 a.m.
As for Pfiefer and Kasler, both will be competing in singles for the first time this fall. Both veterans did compete in doubles qualifying at the All-American, but were ousted in the first round to Iowa's Ruth Seaborne and Morven McCulloch, 8-2. The duo comes into this weekend as the No. 23 doubles team in the country and will try to shift the momentum today when they face Brittany Dubins and Stephanie Wagner of Miami as the two-seed in the field.
Kasler's first singles match will be against Maria Reis of Barry at 10:30 a.m., while Pfeifler will go up against Karina Goia, also of Barry, at noon.
