LOS ANGELES – Four members of the Auburn women’s tennis team will compete in the ITA All-American Tennis Championships beginning Saturday at Los Angeles Tennis Center hosted by UCLA.
“We are excited to be taking four girls to the ITA championships,” Auburn women’s tennis head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “This event is one of the most respected in the country and will be great experience for our young team as they continue to grow and improve leading up to the spring schedule.”
Auburn has entered a pair of doubles teams in the event this weekend, while one singles player has been selected to compete. Sophomore Jen Pfeifler, who is ranked No. 102 in the ITA preseason rankings, will compete in the singles draw.
Pfeifler is the first Auburn singles competitor in the prestigious event since Fani Chifchieva finished as the runner-up in 2008. Additionally, Pfeifler and Jackie Kasler are entered in the doubles competition. The tandem climbed as high as No. 72 a season ago.
Pfeifler and Kasler went 3-0 as a doubles team in the Auburn Fall Invitational earlier in September.
The Tigers’ other duo is sophomore Emily Flickinger and freshman Pleun Burgmans. The competition is the first for Flickinger this fall. Burgmans opened her collegiate career with a 1-1 record last weekend in Las Vegas.
Action in the pre-qualifying round begins on Saturday and continues through Sunday. The qualifying round is Oct. 2-3, while the championship round is scheduled for Oct. 4-7. For updates on the opening round, follow @PreQualies2012 and @AUWomensTennis on Twitter.
