AUBURN, Ala. - Alex Haney was named South Region Senior-of-the-Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in a Wednesday morning release. The two-time, All-SEC First Team selection ended her senior season with a 29-7 singles record and a mark of 18-8 when paired with fellow senior Whitney Chappell in doubles action.
Through four seasons on The Plains, Haney won more matches than any other student-athlete in Auburn women's tennis history. The Grayson, Ga., native accumulated a 100-47 singles record, a 85-46 doubles record and a combined record of 185-93 to lead the Tigers in all three categories.
As a senior, Haney played solely in the No. 2 spot, picking up her 100th career singles win at the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The victory came over USC's Maria Sanchez in opening-round play. Haney and Chappell held down the No. 1 spot in doubles play for the Tigers for the vast majority of the season, compiling an overall record of 18-7, entering the NCAA Tournament as the 12th-ranked team in the country.
Haney earned ITA All-America honors for her performance in both the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Tournaments, as well as earning a spot on the 2007 Second-Team All-SEC as a sophomore.
