AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 33 Auburn women's tennis team will send junior Fani Chifchieva and senior Alex Haney to NCAA singles competition, while the duo of Haney and Whitney Chappell will represent the Tigers in doubles play.
The 2009 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles/Doubles Championships will be held May 20-25 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University. Singles play will commence on Wednesday while first-round doubles action kicks off on Thursday. Finals for both singles and doubles are set for Monday.
For the first time in school history, two Tigers were selected by the NCAA for singles competition.
"I'm excited about having three players qualify for NCAAs," said Auburn head coach Tim Gray. "It's the first time Auburn has had two singles entries and the first time we've had someone in both singles and doubles. All three players have had a solid week of preparation and are ready to play."
Chifchieva (14-6, 7-3 SEC) enters the championships as the fifth-ranked singles player in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Plovdiv, Bulgaria native entered all her matches in the No. 1 spot for the Tigers.
"We've been working very hard this week," said Chifchieva.
Haney (17-3, 9-1 SEC) will enter Wednesday's competition as the 28th ranked singles player in the nation, while the duo of Haney and Chappell (10-3, 6-3 SEC) have earned a No. 12 doubles ranking by the ITA.
