AUBURN- Auburn senior tennis player Fani Chifchieva has been honored as the ITA Southern Region Senior of the Year, the association announced Thursday. The award is her second prestigious ITA honor of the season, as she previously won the ITA Fall Southern Regional Tournament.
The Plovdiv, Bulgaria native was also named to the All-SEC Team for the fourth time of her career on April 29, and is a three-time ITA All-American. On the year, she holds a 13-6 singles record and is 3-4 against nationally-ranked opponents.
In her four seasons on The Plains, the senior ranks third in singles victories with 89 and in combined victories with 164. Previously, she was named SEC Women's Tennis Player of the Year in 2008 and 2007 ITA South Region Freshman of the Year in 2007. In her career, she is 24-17 against nationally-ranked players, and is 33-11 against SEC competition.
Chifchieva was also selected as one of the 64 players to take part in the 2010 NCAA Individual Championship on May 26 in Athens, Ga. She will enter the tournament as an unseeded competitor. She holds an even 9-9 career record against competitors in the tournament, and is an even 3-3 against seeded (1-16) opponents.
Additionally, she is 5-3 all-time in the tournament, and advanced to the semifinals with a 4-1 record in 2008.
