AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn women's tennis sophomore Pleun Burgmans and junior Emily Flickinger earned selections to the individual NCAA Championships as the NCAA released the 64 singles selections and 32 doubles tandems on Wednesday.
"We're extremely proud of Pleun and Emily for their selection to the individual field. They have put in a lot of work this season and deserved this," Auburn head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. "They have been our most consistent doubles team this year, and both have made an impact for us at the top of the lineup in singles."
The team of Burgmans and Flickinger was selected to the doubles field after posting one of the school's best seasons during the 2014 dual match season. The pair has posted a 23-5 overall record and leads the team with a 16-2 mark in dual match play. The duo were strong in conference play, posting an 8-2 record at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
In October, Burgmans and Flickinger won the ITA Southern Regional Doubles Championship and represented the Tigers at the USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, advancing to the consolation semifinals.
Burgmans also picked up her second career selection to the individual singles championships. The sophomore was a first team All-SEC selection, playing every match this year at the No. 1 spot in the Tigers' lineup. She finished with an 18-15 overall record and was 8-11 in dual match play. Burgmans also won the ITA Southern Regional Singles Championship back in October.
This marks the second straight appearance for Burgmans in both singles and doubles in the NCAA Championships, while it was the first selection of her career for Flickinger.
Auburn travels to Clemson, S.C. for its first-round match of the NCAA team championship and will take on Winthrop at 9 a.m. CT on Friday, May 9 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
The singles and doubles individual competition will be played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., May 21-26, following the conclusion of the team championship.
