Chifchieva, Haney Named to All-SEC First Team

AUBURN - The 2009 women's tennis first and second team All-SEC, All-Freshman team, and the yearly awards were announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. Auburn's Fani Chifchieva and Alex Haney were both named to the All-SEC First Team. Four players were unanimous selections to the All-SEC first team, including Chifchieva. While a tie in first-team and second-team voting added an additional player to each team. This is the second year that the SEC has chosen an All-Freshman team. Chifchieva, a two-time All-American, is 15-5, 7-3 SEC as Auburn's No. 1 singles player and has been ranked among the nation's top-11 players all season. She has faced 14 nationally ranked opponents for an 9-5 record, including three wins against top-20 nationally ranked opponents. In her three years, the junior from Plovdiv, Bulgaria, ranks third in Auburn history in career combined wins with 141 and in singles victories with 86. Chifchieva has previously been named the 2007 ITA South Region Freshman of the Year and was the SEC Women's Tennis Player of the Year in 2008. It is the third time in Chifchieva's career that she has been named to the All-SEC First Team. Haney currently has a record 17-2, 9-1 SEC as Auburn's No. 2 singles player and has been ranked the entire season in singles action. She is 9-1 against nationally ranked players during her senior season and has beaten two top-25 singles players. In her four year career, she is 15-10 against nationally ranked players. The Grayson, Ga., native is Auburn's all-time winningest player with a combined record of 202-87 (114-40 singles; 88-47doubles). She has had three 20-plus winning seasons in singles play and two in doubles play during her time on the Plains. In 2008, Haney earned All-American honors in doubles play. This is the second straight All-SEC First Team nod for Haney. She was also named Second-Team All-SEC in 2007.
