AUBURN - A pair of Auburn women's tennis singles players, along with a doubles team, are listed among the nation's top 30 in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings released Tuesday.
Two-time All-American Fani Chifchieva moved up one spot in the singles poll to sixth. It is the third time this season that Chifchieva has been listed as the nation's sixth-ranked singles player. She has climbed as high as fifth and has also been ranked seventh and eighth. The junior owns a 15-5, 7-3 SEC record and is 9-5 against nationally ranked opponents.
Senior All-American Alex Haney is ranked 26th in singles action. After reaching No. 30 in mid-February, Haney dropped to No. 35, but has steadily climbed higher in the rankings each week. She has been ranked as high as No. 24. The Grayson, Ga., native leads the Tigers with a 17-2, 9-1 SEC record and has won 10 straight matches.
The senior doubles tandem of Whitney Chappell and Haney have earned their highest ranking together, coming in at No. 14. The duo began playing together at the end of February, and broke into the national rankings a month later at No. 44. Chappell and Haney moved up each week, cracking into the top 30 last week at No. 21. They own a 10-3, 6-3 SEC record.
The Tigers are listed at No. 33 in the team poll.
Auburn has earned the ninth seed at the SEC Tournament, where the Tigers will hit the court on Thursday with an 8:30 a.m., match against eighth-seeded Alabama at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
