BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Redshirt freshman Fani Chifchieva and sophomore Alex Haney earned All-SEC honors, the Southeastern Conference office announced on Tuesday. Chifchieva and Haney are the first Auburn women's tennis players to be named all-conference since 2002 when Petra Bercik and Carolina Ramirez made it as a doubles team.
"This is a great honor for both Fani and Alex," head coach Tim Gray said. "Each of them have been rock steady for us all year and they have helped this program rise to national prominence."
Chifchieva earned All-SEC First Team honors after finishing the regular season 15-5 overall and 8-3 in the SEC, while playing the No. 1 singles spot in each match. The Plovdiv, Bulgaria native is 5-5 versus nationally ranked opponents and is currently ranked 22nd in the country. Chifchieva was honored by the conference earlier this season when she earned SEC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on March 20.
Haney, who earned All-SEC Second Team honors, has had a stellar season for the Tigers. The Grayson, Ga., native is 18-2 overall and 10-1 in the SEC. Her only two losses came to ranked opponents from Georgia Tech and Florida, both of whose teams were ranked third in the country at the time. Haney will enter the SEC Tournament with a four match win streak and a winner of nine of her last 10. She also ranked 20th in the country with doubles partner Melissa Koning.
The Tigers will face No. 51 Arkansas in the opening round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday. The match will begin at Noon CT in Lexington, Ky.
