COLUMBIA, S.C. -
The No. 37 Auburn Tigers women's tennis team (9-5, 3-3 SEC) will head east to take on a pair of nationally ranked SEC opponents in No. 32 South Carolina (13-3, 5-1 SEC) and No. 3 Florida (13-1, 4-1 SEC). The Tigers will take on the Gamecocks on Friday at 1 p.m. and the Gators at Noon on Sunday.
"We took a pretty big step last weekend, beating the number one ranked team in the country" head coach Tim Gray said. "That just proved that we can beat any team in the country, so we will be playing with a lot of confidence this weekend."
Auburn's ranking moved up four spots this week after going 1-1 last weekend, defeating No. 1 Georgia and falling to Tennessee. Freshman Fani Chifchieva is ranked 30th in singles with a 12-2 record, and has won nine matches in a row. Sophomore Alex Haney has been having an outstanding spring, reeling in a 13-1 record by winning nine in a row as well.
The doubles tandem of Haney and Melissa Koning have also found themselves in the rankins, coming in at No. 14 with a mark of 11-3. The duo has won four straight.
Haney and Koning will have tough competition this weekend as they face the 18th ranked team of Gira Schofield and Ana Zubori of USC and No. 28 Diana Srebrovic and Megan Alexander of UF.
On Sunday against the Gators, Auburn's singles players will be put to the test as Florida features four of the top 82 players, with freshman Megan Alexander leading the charge at No. 22.
After this weekend, the Tigers will have played five-straight ranked opponents, with the rest of the schedule featuring teams from the top-60.
