MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Auburn women’s tennis will take part in the annual Blue Gray National Tennis Classic this weekend at Montgomery’s Lagoon Park Tennis Center.
"We are all very excited to play in such a prestigious tournament," Auburn head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. "Last weekend was pretty draining on all of us, but everyone got some rest this week and the team has worked hard this week to prepare. We will get to face some tough competition this weekend and it will be another good test for us as we prepare for SEC play."
The Tigers (4-1) picked up a key road win over ULM last Sunday, while also having a match at Louisiana-Lafayette rained out.
Auburn is scheduled to open play on Friday with the draw’s top seed, No. 12 Virginia. The Cavaliers (6-2) enter the tournament after a pair of losses in last weekend’s ITA National Indoor Championships. Virginia defeated Georgia Tech, but sandwiched the win with losses to Northwestern and Baylor.
Virginia’s roster features five ranked singles players highlighted by No. 21 senior Emily Fraser, as well as two ranked doubles tandems.
Arizona, SMU, Illinois, Princeton, Oklahoma State and number two seed Alabama are also participating in the competition. Auburn’s match is scheduled to being on Friday at 1:30 p.m. With a win, the Tigers would advance to face the winner of SMU and Arizona. Teams are guaranteed three matches.
