AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 26 Auburn women's tennis team will be heading to Montgomery to defend last year's title at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24.
"The Blue Gray is really special to us," said coach Lauren Spencer. "If there's any time to come together, it's going to be at the Blue Gray because there's great competition with the teams that are going to be there. You've got tremendous support from the Blue Gray staff and the fans. The event is fantastic. It's always very special for us."
The Tigers are the No. 3 seed in the tournament. Their opening match will be on Friday at 12:30 p.m. CT against the University of Denver (5-3), who boasts 2 ranked singles players and one ranked doubles tandem. The winner of that match will advance to the winner's bracket to take on the winner of Illinois and Yale at either 8:30 a.m. or 4:30 p.m., depending on the results. The winner of that match will play in the championship round on Saturday at noon CT.
"Every match that you play, you gain confidence," said Spencer. "We're going to use the confidence we've built up throughout the season, but know that we still have work to do. We'll just keep moving forward, regardless of what happens. Our goal is to win the SEC championship and go after a national championship, so we'll take every victory leading up to that. We have a lot of work to do between now and May, but winning this tournament would be a huge boost to the team."
Losers will drop to the consolation bracket. The first round of consolation games will be played on Friday at 8:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. CT. The second round of consolation matches will be played on Saturday at noon and 2:30 p.m. CT.
