AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 20 Auburn women's tennis team travels to New Orleans this weekend as the Tigers are slated to play four matches in two days looking to improve upon their four-match winning streak.
Auburn (4-1) opens play on Friday morning at 9 a.m. against Southern before taking on No. 66 Tulane at 2 p.m. at the City Park Pepsi Center. The Tigers will wrap up play on Saturday, facing Northwestern State at 10 a.m. and Nicholls State at 4 p.m.
The Tigers have won four straight matches and swept a home doubleheader last Sunday against Georgia Southern, 7-0, and Samford, 4-0, at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. This weekend's matches will give the Tigers a chance to hit the road, playing away from home for their first time since the season-opening ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Austin, Texas.
Freshman Reka Muller paces Auburn with a 15-5 record in singles and is 3-1 this season in dual match play. Junior Emily Flickinger got a big boost in the latest ITA singles rankings and now sits at No. 68. Flickinger is 3-0 in dual matches this season and currently has an 8-2 record overall in singles.
The doubles tandem of Muller and Michala Kucharova have continued to provide the Tigers with solid play. The duo is 5-0 in dual matches and is 9-2 when paired together. Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger enter this weekend ranked at No. 15 in the latest ITA doubles rankings and are 10-3 overall, 3-0 in dual matches.
Southern (0-3) comes into Friday's match off a 6-1 loss at Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 15. Tulane is 3-3 this season and has won two straight matches. The Green Wave knocked off Southeastern, 5-1, and Xavier (La.), 4-1, last weekend.
Northwestern State (2-1) landed at No. 72 in the ITA team rankings this week after finishing 1-1 last weekend. The Lady Demons defeated Southern Miss, 4-3, last Saturday, before falling to UAB by the same score on Sunday.
Nicholls State enters the weekend with a 2-1 record. The Colonels dropped their season-opener at LSU, 4-2, but have won their last two matches taking down No. 56 Tulane, 4-3, before topping ULM, 5-2, on Monday.
Auburn returns to action next weekend, competing in the Blue Gray Classic in Montgomery, Ala., to wrap up non-conference play. The Tigers return home on Feb. 28 to open SEC play against Ole Miss at 2 p.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
