AUBURN, Ala. -- After picking up six combined wins in singles and doubles this past weekend, Alannah Griffin has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday.
"Alannah has really done a fantastic job competing for us in the middle of the lineup,” Auburn head coach Lauren Spencer said. “She brings such positive energy to our team and the girls feed off of that. Alannah is such a gamer. She is so athletic and to have a freshman be such a leader on court is a huge boost in confidence for our team. We know this is just the beginning of amazing things we will see from her."
Last week, Griffin went 3-0 in singles, including a 6-0, 6-2 win over Burcu Tari from UT Martin. She also beat Efriliya Herlina of Troy, 6-3, 6-3 and then turned around to defeat Pippa Carr from Texas State 6-0, 6-1.
Griffin has been instrumental in Auburn’s success this season. She leads the team with 30 combined wins in singles (16) and doubles (14). Playing mostly out of the No. 4 spot, Griffin is 6-1 in singles during the dual-match season.
As freshman from England, Griffin has partnered with sophomore Andie Dikosavljevic to become one of the top performing doubles teams in the SEC. The duo is now 6-0 during the dual-match season.
On Saturday, Griffin and Dikosavljevic picked up two big wins, including a win over Troy’s Sanae Ohta and Nancy Karaky, 6-4. Competing in the No. 2 spot on Sunday, the duo beat Texas State’s Katy Collin and Eva Dench, 6-0.
Griffin will look to continue her early success this Saturday as Auburn women’s tennis will host Mercer in a doubleheader.
