AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 34 Auburn women's tennis enters week three of the 2010 spring season, and will play host to the Alabama A&M Bulldogs Saturday at the City of Auburn/Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Auburn holds a 1-0 all-time series lead over Alabama A&M, as the Tigers swept the Bulldogs 7-0 on Jan. 26, 2008.
Alabama A&M has played one dual match this season, dropping a 6-1 decision to Lipscomb on Jan. 25. Freshman Denise Cherry won the lone match of the day for the Aggies after dropping the first sest 6-4, but she rallied back for a 6-1, 6-2 win in the final two sets over Lipscomb's Elizabeth Keevil.
Auburn is coming off of the ITA Kickoff last weekend, where the Tigers swept LSU and were downed by USC, who is now ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest ITA National Poll. The Tigers moved up seven spots from #35 to #28 following the successful weekend in California.
Auburn is led by three-time All-American Fani Chifchieva (2-1), who enters the match ranked No. 71 in the nation in singles action. A pair of freshmen have combined for Auburn's top doubles team in the third flight, as Plamena Kurteva and Paulina Schippers have combined for a 4-0 record so far this season. Also performing well for Auburn in singles action is senior Myrthe Molenveld (2-2).
Action starts on Saturday at 4 p.m. from the City of Auburn/Yarbrough Tennis Center. Live stats will be available at AuburnTigers.com.
