AUBURN, Ala.- The No. 35 Auburn women's tennis team, fresh off a split last weekend against Kennesaw St. and No. 10 Georgia Tech, will travel to Los Angeles, Calif. this weekend for the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The event will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium and will be hosted by the University of Southern California.
Auburn's first round opponent, No. 28 LSU, enters the tournament after shutting out Prairie View A&M and Louisiana-Lafayette on the opening weekend of play. The pair of victories were good enough for LSU to move up one spot in the ITA team rankings, as LSU was previously ranked No. 29. The team is led by sophomore Whitney Wolf, who is ranked 120th in singles play.
No. 9 USC enters the tournament with a 2-0 record on the young season after defeating Long Beach State and UC Irvine 6-1 on Jan. 24-25. USC has four players ranked in the ITA top-40, led by No. 8 Maria Sanchez. Also cracking the rankings for the Trojans is No. 18 Danielle Lao, No. 37 Valeria Pulido, and No. 39 Alison Ramos. Sanchez and Ramos combine in doubles to form the No. 19 tandem in the country.
San Diego will begin the tournament sporting a 1-0 record this season after defeating Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 24, sweeping the match 7-0 and winning all nine matches. Sophomore Juliette Coupez holds down the No. 1 singles spot for the Torero's, and was 12-8 in singles play a year ago as a freshman while playing primarily in the No. 1 spot. Coupez and senior Alexandra Demidova combine to form San Diego's top doubles squad.
Auburn will take on SEC opponent No. 28 LSU in the first round of the team tournament at noon on Friday. Following the opening round outcomes, Auburn will take on either No. 9 USC or San Diego Saturday at either 2:30 or 4:30 p.m.
