Waco, Texas – The Auburn Women’s tennis team posted 20 total victories in the season opener over the weekend at the HEB Invitational hosted by Baylor University.
“It was a good weekend of tennis,” Auburn women’s tennis head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “We had a variety of different levels of competition this weekend and it was good for us to be able to play our entire team. It was a good opportunity to challenge everyone. We put together some good doubles performances and I thought we were able face some quality competition and get good experience both indoors and outdoors. I was very excited to see the fight in this young team. This weekend was a good test and a very good experience to be ready for next weekend at North Carolina.”
Jackie Kasler won two-straight matches before being defeated by Baylor’s Alex Leatu in only her second singles loss of the year, 6-4, 1-6, 10-5, in the Yellow draw. The junior started off the weekend with a, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Houston’s Charlotte Phillips followed by a win over Stephen F. Austin’s Kateryna Bugayenko, 6-4, 6-1.
Freshman Ashley Kitchen continued her success from the fall with strong wins over Houston’s Jo Garvey, 6-1, 6-0, and SFA’s Laura Servise, 6-1, 6-0. Kitchen would eventually lose to singles champion Megan Horter from Baylor in a hard fought, 6-2, 1-6, 10-4, three-set loss in the Orange draw.
Senior Plamena Kurteva opened her final spring season with two wins over Houston’s Dionne Sanders, 6-1, 6-2, and SFA’s Valeria Terentyeva, 6-3, 6-4, before falling to Baylor’s Victoria Kisialeva, 6-0, 6-7(7), 10-6 in the Purple draw.
The Tigers enjoyed considerable success in doubles with the duo of Paulina Schippers and Jen Pfeifler going undefeated throughout the weekend.
Schippers and Pfeifler earned an 8-1 win over Stephen F. Austin’s Lorca and Servise, then a decisive 8-0 victory over the tandem of UTA’s Scott and Foote and finally an 8-1 triumph over Houston’s Fraser and Kazimieruk to finish off the Blue draw.
In more doubles action, Kasler and Emily Flickinger earned two wins throughout the weekend defeating Malena Gordo and Margot de Haan from SFA and Houston’s Charlotte Phillips and Rocio Martin. The pair’s lone loss came at the hands of Baylor’s Ema Burgi and Victoria Kisialeva, 8-5, in the White draw.
The Tigers are in action next on January 25-27 at the ITA Kickoff Weekend event in Chapel Hill, N.C.
