AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn women’s tennis will open up the 2017 season this weekend as the Tigers host Samford on Saturday and then Louisiana-Monroe and Georgia State on Sunday at Yarbrough Tennis Center.
“The team has done a great job preparing in practices for a tough season,” Auburn head coach Lauren Spencer said. “They are anxious to get matches started this weekend. The teams we have coming in are all quality matches that are going to give us great experience to prepare us for the ITA Kickoff Weekend.”
Auburn will be led by No. 13 Alizee Michaud and No. 101 Andie Dikosavljevic, who combined for 46 singles victories last season. Michaud finished the fall season with a 10-3 record and advanced to the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Dikosavljevic won 13 matches against ranked opponents last season.
Also joining Michaud and Dikosavljevic will be 2016 SEC All-Freshman selection Alannah Griffin, who was second on the team in singles victories last season with 28. Griffin and Caroline Turner were selected as team captains for the 2017 season.
The Tigers will welcome three newcomers to the team this season in Georgie Axon, Taylor Russo and Roos van der Zwaan. Axon finished the fall season 9-4, including a 3-1 record against ranked opponents. Russo paired with Michaud in doubles at the Riviera Women’s All-American in the fall and advanced to the round of 16 in the main draw doubles bracket. van der Zwaan redshirted the fall season.
Auburn’s match against Samford will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday. The ULM and Georgia State matches will begin at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free for all matches.
