AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn's Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger will begin the 2015 campaign ranked No. 3 in the nation, according to the ITA preseason rankings which were released on Tuesday.
Burgmans and Flickinger posted an 11-3 overall record during the fall, finishing as the runner-ups at the Rivera/ITA All-American and USTA/ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Their No. 3 ranking is the highest preseason ranking for an Auburn doubles pair in school history. The duo earned All-America honors last year for their historic run to the NCAA doubles semifinals in May.
"It is good to see Pleun and Emily recognized for their play in the fall," Auburn head coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. "Our goal is to compete for championships and we feel they have a great chance to make a run this season."
"We're very excited to get the season underway in 11 days, but we still have lots of work to do on the practice courts before we play our first match," Meisner said. "The girls are ready to get back to work and I'm excited to see what this season holds for our team."
In the singles rankings, Burgmans begins the year at No. 36. The junior was 7-4 overall in the fall season, finishing as the runner-up at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional in October. Burgmans has 113 combined wins during her two years at Auburn which ranks as the 14th-most in school history.
The Tigers enter the 2015 dual match season at No. 28 in the ITA team rankings. Auburn finished last year 17-11 and at No. 27 in the final release. The Tigers are coming off their second-straight NCAA Tournament berth.
Auburn opens its season on Saturday, Jan. 17 with a doubleheader at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Tigers will host Middle Tennessee at 10 a.m. CT and then close out the day against Alabama A&M at 3 p.m. Admission is free to all home Auburn tennis matches.
