AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn women’s tennis team begins the 2014 season in 23 days and the Tigers open the year ranked No. 23 in the ITA preseason rankings.
Auburn finished last season at No. 25 in the ITA rankings as the Tigers finished with a 19-9 record, earning the second-most wins during a single season in school history. The Tigers return five players from last year’s squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Pleun Burgmans, last year’s SEC Freshman of the Year and ITA Southern Regional Rookie of the Year, enters 2014 as the No. 12 singles player in the nation. Burgmans finished 10-4 this fall and was one of four Tigers to play in the ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, advancing to the consolation finals in the singles draw.
Emily Flickinger joins Burgmans as the second Tiger ranked inside the top-100 at No. 98. Flickinger advanced all the way to the ITA Southern Regional final in October, before falling to Burgmans in straight sets.
On the doubles side, the Gulf Breeze, Fla. duo of Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfeifler will begin the 2014 season as the 23rd-ranked team in the nation. The pair finished 5-6 in the fall and appeared in the ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
The team of Burgmans/Flickinger joins Kasler and Pfeifler in the preseason doubles rankings. Burgmans/Flickinger won the ITA Southern Regional doubles championship in October, posting a team-best of 7-3 mark during fall competition. The pair also competed in the ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
The Tigers open the 2014 season at No. 17 Texas on Jan. 25 as a part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Auburn will close out its opening weekend of play against Florida State or Rice on Jan 26.
