Chifchieva Falls in Quarterfinals; Tigers Successful at SEC Fall Coaches Classic

AUBURN - Auburn's ninth-ranked women's tennis player Fani Chifchieva suffered a 6-3, 6-3, quarterfinal loss to sixth-ranked and fourth seeded Maria Mosolova of Northwestern Friday to bow out of the ITA National Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

Chifchieva, seeded sixth in the tournament, opened the day by handing No. 68 Jennifer Stevens of Virginia a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, loss in the round of 16. The junior All-American holds a 7-3 record in fall competition.

While Chifchieva was in action at the ITA National Indoor Championships, the rest of the Auburn women's tennis team was in action at the Southeastern Conference Fall Coaches Classic at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Tigers opened the tournament Thursday winning four of seven singles matches.

Melissa Koning upended No. 55 Megan Broderick of Kentucky, 6-2, 6-3. No. 51 Alex Haney defeated Mississippi State's Olesya Tsigvintseva, 6-1, 7-5. Whitney Chappell handed Arkansas' Kate Lukomskaya a 7-5, 6-0, loss and Heather Bybee picked up a three-set win over Jordan Zachary of Mississippi State, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

In Friday's doubles action, the fourth-ranked duo of Haney and Koning picked up a pair of wins, first knocking off LSU's Whitney Wolf and Nicole Kantor, 8-4, and following up with an 8-2 victory over Courtney McLane and Taylor Lindsey of Alabama. The All-American Auburn doubles team pushed its fall record to 9-2. Also registering a doubles win for the Tigers were Whitney Chappell and Jil Hastenrath with an 8-4 win over Emily Carbone and Ekaterina Lukomskaya of Arkansas.



Singles play continued on Friday, with the Tigers winning five of eight matches. Koning picked up her second win of the tournament by defeating Ela Kaluder of Arkansas, 6-4, 6-3. Chappell also won her second singles victory with a 7-6(5), 7-5, win over Vanderbilt's Keily Ulery. Daniela Vuckadinovic picked up two wins by first receiving a default from Caroline Lilley of Kentucky and then downed Ole Miss' Mimi Renaudin Ole Miss 6-1, 7-6(5). Dunja Djuranovic notched a 7-5, 6-1, win over Soledad Podlipnik of Ole Miss.

Action will resume at 9 a.m. at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic on Saturday.
