AUBURN, Ala. – Freshman Georgie Axon picked up five wins and won the Myke Loomis singles draw on Saturday at the Roberta Alison Classic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Axon finishes the fall with nine wins, with three coming against ranked opponents.
“I am very proud of how hard the girls have worked this fall,” associate head coach Chris Hooshyar said. “We really push the girls hard in the fall so that we can build a culture of mental toughness. I think that Georgie (Axon) really showed that this weekend by winning her singles flight.”
The U.K. native defeated Troy’s Sanae Ohta 6-0, 6-1 and went on to defeat Nadia Gizdova (Georgia Tech) to advance to today’s singles final. Axon picked up her third win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 75 Anastasia Rentouli (Mississippi State), 6-1, 6-1 in the final.
Axon paired with fellow freshman Taylor Russo in the Shelley Godwin doubles draw and won the consolation final, defeating Depaul’s Yuliya Shupenia and Ana Vladutu, 8-4. The duo advanced to the final by defeating Anki Wind and Hanna Sogn of Memphis, 8-5.
Sophomore Alannah Griffin added two wins on the weekend, finishing third in the Becca Baum singles draw. After opening up the weekend with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, win over West Alabama’s Amina Mukhametshina. After falling the in main draw semifinals, Griffin defeated Nami Otsuka (Georgia Tech), 6-2, 6-2.
In their final action of the season, Allie Michaud and Andie Dikosavljevic will represent Auburn women’s tennis in Flushing Meadows, New York at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, beginning Nov. 3. Draws will be released later this week.
