ATHENS, Ga. - Melissa Koning's run at the ITA Southern Regional Championships ended in the semifinals on Monday as she fell in straight sets to Florida's Marrit Boonstra, 6-2, 6-0. The loss ended what had been an impressive run for the junior from Mount Eliza, Australia.
Koning's appearance in the semis came via two straight set victories and a pair of three-set match wins in the "A" Singles - Lower Half. In the opening round she defeated Tatiana Soldatova of Jacksonville, 6-3, 6-0, and then downed No. 4 seed Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to reach the Round of 16. Florida's Megan Alexander, one of the 9-16 seeds, was her next victim as she won 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals. Once there she knocked out Noelle Hickey of Georgia Tech, 7-6 (6), 6-0, but she could not keep her successful run going, falling to Boonstra, another 9-16 seed.
With the ITA Regional now over, the team will return to the courts Nov. 6-9 when it plays in the SEC Fall Coaches Classic in Tuscaloosa.
