Melissa Koning went the distance in her Round of 16 match with Florida's Megan Alexander and came out the victor in the three set thriller to advance into Monday's semifinals of the ITA Southern Regional Championships at the Dan McGill Tennis Center at the University of Georgia. Koning will face off with Noelle Hickey of Georgia Tech on Monday.
Koning, who had advanced to the Round of 16 with wins over Tatiana Soldatova of Jacksonville (6-3, 6-0) and Ole Miss' Kristi Boxx (5-7, 6-4, 6-3), the No. 4 seed in the draw, defeated Alexander, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, to advance into the semis. Her counterpart on Monday, Hickey, defeated two ranked opponents on her way to the semis, knocking out Yvette Hyndman of Georgia (No. 8 seed) in the Round of 32 and Lauren Macfarlane of Florida State (seeded 9-16) in the Round of 16.
Alex Haney, seeded 9-16 in the tournament, could not carry her hot play of Saturday into Sunday, dropping her Round of 16 match with Christy Striplin of Georgia Tech, the No. 7 seed, 6-4, 6-4, in the first match on Sunday. She had reached the Round of 16 by collecting wins over Jacksonville's Juliama Umeki (6-1, 6-0) and Eva Sambrano of Florida Gulf Coast (6-1, 6-0).
